Há cerca de 150 anos, em Fevereiro de 1855, após uma noite de queda intensa de neve o dia amanheceu, em Devon na Inglaterra, com um estranho rasto na neve. Pegadas deixadas por algo com duas pernas e que tinham a forma de cascos. A criatura terá percorrido numa noite algo entre 64 a 160 quilómetros.
Os morados ficaram perplexos e devido à estranha forma disseram que as pegadas foram deixadas pelo Diabo. O mais intrigante deste mistério é que nenhum obstáculo deteve esta criatura, rios, muros, celeiros foram pisados. Nos telhados cobertos de neve era possível observar as pegadas. Desafiando a lógica e as próprias leis da natureza, tal rasto não poderia ter sido deixado por um humano em apenas uma noite.
As teorias do Diabo depressa teriam outras teorias mais racionais para lhes fazer frente. A primeira é que o rasto foi deixado por burros ou póneis mas é fácil constatar que tal seria impossível. O rasto além de ter sido feito por algo que caminhou sobre duas pernas, também foram deixadas marcas em cima de telhados.
Outra teoria é a do balão perdido. Um balão foi que se soltou acidentalmente andou à deriva por vários quilómetros, tal poderia explicar as marcas deixadas em cima dos telhados mas não a sua forma, o vento o teria empurrado para os lados e assim o rasto não seria a direito e seria também impossível que ele não ficasse preso em alguma árvore.
Surgiu ainda a teoria de que as marcas foram deixadas por cangurus em fuga de um zoo privado, criada pelo Reverendo Musgrave, porém mais tarde numa carta dirigida a um jornal que inventou a história aquela história para descansar as pessoas da sua paróquia.
O misterioso fenómeno de Devon não é caso único, em 19 de Julho de 1205, em Coggeshall após uma tempestade eléctrica surgiram o mesmo tipo de pegadas e mais recentemente, em 12 de Março de 2009 o fenómeno repetiu-se novamente em Devon. Noutros locais do mundo também há relatos de eventos semelhantes.
Até hoje ninguém sabe o que aconteceu de verdade.
